The story of a square of fabric bearing the imperial eagle that fell into the hands of the first light infantry battalion on August 14th 1914 during the Battle of Saint Blaise la Roche, a first victory over the enemy army, an affront to German arrogance. It's also here on the edge of Niargoutte Farm at the end of violent combat that the first Alsatians deserted their ranks in an army that they realised was not their own.
