Located on the right bank of the Bruche, Rothau was the capital of the lordship of Ban de la Roche. Count Palatine George John I of Veldenz acquired Ban in 1, comprising six communes in total, and introduced the reform in 1584. The parish of Rothau then that of Waldersbach therefore came under the Lutheran Church. From 1589 the administrative directives resulting from the attachment of Alsace to the Kingdom of France imposed on the Catholic and Protestant communities of Rothau the sharing of the same church. This simultaneum regime was used in Alsace in all the communes where the two faiths coexisted. However, a Lutheran church was built in 1724 according to the plans of a Colmar architect, Louis Michel Boltz. See the map
