During the second half of the 19th century, factory owners in Bruges had a series of housing built for workshop workers. They are particularly representative of workers' housing, which was then considered "minimal but sufficient": two rooms, kitchen, cellar and attic, sometimes with a lean-to for livestock.
Some evidence of this recent past can be seen in the Bruche valley: La Broque (rue du Général de Gaulle), Schirmeck (rue du Sanatorium).
