The valley’s industrialists built their homes close to their factories and to their workers. The result can be seen today with the fine stately residences sitting imposingly in the heart of the villages and workers’ areas, or standing in the middle of grounds accompanied by their occasionally longforgotten gardens. These generally follow the classic model for urban residences. Among them, we should mention a number of highly original buildings such as the neo-colonial residence of John Heywood, a British industrialist, at Vipucelle (La Broque) or the outstanding architecture of the
residences belonging to the Mullerhof family at Muhlbach-sur-Bruche, not forgetting the collection of buildings omprising the former cotton and worsted yarn mill administered by J.
