The French military cemetery of Les Chênes holds the remains of soldiers who died for France during the violent fighting that took place in the Bruche Valley and around Schirmeck in the summer of 1914, particularly during the “Battle of the Oaks” (“bataille des Chênes”).
Established in 1924, this military necropolis contains the remains of 504 soldiers. Sixty of them rest in individual graves, while two ossuaries hold the remains of 444 soldiers. In the surrounding area, numerous remains of fortified shelters as well as many memorial steles can still be seen today.
