Les Scènes Sauvages : UNE RÉPUBLIQUE LUMINEUSE

Site du Chenot - Accès et stationnements indiqués dans le village - 67130 Wildersbach - Localiser

A parable of the loss of childhood, A Luminous Republic traces the existence of a group of wild children in a town in the Amazon forest. Appearing out of nowhere, sleeping wherever they may be, the "community of the Thirty-Two" gradually throws the town of San Cristobal into a state of stupefaction: these children speak an unknown language; they pillage, steal, break things, sometimes attack the inhabitants, then disappear and always remain untraceable for the authorities. But one day other children disappear, leaving their homes to join this secret and fascinating community. The torpor of the inhabitants quickly gives way to panic, then anger, and violence. "The thirty-two children have all perished," we learn at the beginning of the novel. The events, which occurred in 1993, are recounted 22 years after they took place by one of the witnesses at the time, the novel's narrator, a young civil servant appointed to head the city's social services. It is because it contradicts the most common stereotypes of childhood that the existence of the band of the Thirty-Two becomes intolerable in the eyes of the notables, who are terrified that their own children might prolong in their homes an unthinkable challenge to the established order.
